Lynn Roberts is much more than an impersonator or a tribute artist in that he has been performing for so long and his love for his subjects is so evident. Also evident is the 110% he puts into every show. One thing that tells you how much passion Lynn Roberts has for what he does is the people he chooses to pay tribute to. These are classic entertainers not as familiar to younger audiences who may be thinking of hiring an Elvis Impersonator, a Beatles or even a Pink Floyd Tribute Group.
But I’m going to let Lynn Roberts tell his story:
**************************************************************************************************************
How did you come to be?…basically, your origin as a performer?
I started as a musician in my fathers band, worked way through college as musician, played with name bands , started doing comedy and impersonations, and for over many years have only had to be an entertainer to make a very good living.
How long have you been doing it?
I don’t care to give my exact time, but I will tell you I have two lifetime achievement awards, one from AFM and one from the Reel Awards of Las Vegas
What kind of services do you offer? I mean, I know what you do, but could you give me a range of where you perform and what kind of events hire you?
I still offer my band, but mainly I perform now as a Tribute artist as Bob Hope, Red Skelton, Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante, I do theaters, conventions, and variety shows and also USO themed events.
What should a client look for when hiring you?
They should have a good sized budget, a good venue to perform in, and an audience at least 45 or older.
What are some things you look for in a client?
I look for a client that is reputable, and has a larger audience, and can afford my airfare, hotel, Ground transportation and can supply lighting and sound for the show.
How do you handle a situation with an unresponsive audience?
I guess the question is, How do I handle etc…. For the past 11 years I have not run into that situation since my audiences come to see me and the personalities I represent, however I learned a long time ago how to draw and audience out and get them involved. It’s a matter of communication on a reality lever with them.
What’s the best part of your job? the worst?
The best part of my job is hearing the laughter and meeting the audience after the show and hearing stories they love to tell me about meeting Bob Hope or Red Skelton etc. On Nov 10th/13 Kelly Hope Bob Hope’s son came to see my show and praised me to the audience, that was wonderful. WORST? Not much worst, but If there is a worst it would be having a flight not get in on time or missing a connection.
What would you say to someone interested in doing that you’re doing?
I would tell them to practice, I if doing impersonations, Pick a celebrity you admire, and watch as much video of him/her as possible, and try to be that person.
What’s your favorite story about an event at which you entertained?
When I do theaters and I get to change costume for each of my characters, almost every time at the end of the show I got to the lobby as Bob Hope in his military outfit and at least one or two people will come to me and ask, “ are the other guys coming out too?” They actually think there were other actors doing my characters and then I have to tell them, “NO” it was all me.
